Harry Reid’s “Smear Letter” Results

The sale of Harry Reid’s attack letter (signed by 41 senators, some presidential wannabes, all Democrats) on the free speech of a private citizen, Rush Limbaugh, breaks eBay’s record for a charitable donation sale. Previous to this the record was $800,000 for one of Jay Leno’s motocycles. This historic document, four pieces of paper, went to Betty Casey for $2,100,100 yesterday. Limbaugh’s press release here, including the philanthropic background of Betty Casey.

And for the most ridiculous item of the day (MRIOTD), Sen. Harry Reid’s pathetic attempt to take some credit for the eBay auction.

Have you noticed the virtual blackout on this letter and what exactly it represents in the mainstream media?

PDF of the infamous and historical letter, signed by Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, Charles Schumer, and my own Bill Nelson among others.

Sands In Atlantic City Demolished

Putting a different twist on bringing the house down, the Sands Hotel and Casino was imploded. It appeared to go down like a deck of cards. See the video.

I liked Atlantic City before they bulldozed it to build casinos. The city was a city back then. Atlantic City has not had a mayor for decades that has not been charged with racketeering or some such felony. That’s not to say that casino gambling has anything to do with it, but that’s where the money is.

Mel Martinez Resigns As RNC Chair

Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) has resigned as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Now there’s a decision I can agree with.

He dragged the party into “comprehensive” reform double-talk when the party itself was not there. Bush started this mess by appointing him. Looking back, it doesn’t take a Latino as RNC chair to engage that special constituency to attract support. Obviously Bush and he were on the same page. But on this issue they were the only pages in the book .Mel Martinez on Immigration

His political career is over in Florida. He has no chance of being re-elected as a republican. His office was flooded with calls from Floridians, like myself, advising against the President’s plan. It was an overwhelming majority of calls NOT in favor of the bill. For whatever reason he chose to ignore his constituents. Then he speaks to his critics with a condescending attitude and challenges us to submit our own suggestions. Then he ignores his constituents again. He still hasn’t released a single word about the suggestions he received. His constituents will never forget how he thumbed his nose at them. It’s over for him politically, as a republican anyway.

The President should pick the guy that he should have picked last year, Michael Steele.

Keith Oberman Comic Relief

It’s not that I don’t have a sense of humor, but this is the kind of humor I’d expect from a George Carlin routine, not a MSNBC cable news program. The topic of the last segment of tonight’s show was concerning the Ellen DeGeneres pet adoption debacle. His guest, Joel Mchale of “The Soup,” expressed frustration with the significance of the story said “who would want to watch an animal that can lick its own privates anyway?” To which Oberman says, “well we could always go to the White House for that. Ah, no I’m sorry.”

I’m not calling for him to lose his job over this. He is good right where he is, where people can see how the wacko left thinks and what they say. Oberman is the man. The comedy begins at 4:20 into the video.

It’s A New Day In Philadelphia This Sunday

Following through on Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson’s plan to make Philly a safer place to live, the 10,000 Men On The Street program kicks off this Sunday October 21, 2007. ‘It’s a new day in Philadelphia’ kicks off in the Liacouras Center at Temple University, 12 noon. Be there if you can help. You can register online here. ‘Philly’s Best,’ WDAS-FM is participating with a message of their own, “Put It Down. ”

Entertainment insider, local promoter and movie producer Charles “Charlie Mack” Alston, and music mogul, Philadelphia icon and community developer Kenny Gamble combined forces with Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson to help combat the senseless gun violence plaguing the streets of Philadelphia and promote harmony in the neighborhoods. The community rallies reflect a partnership with a broad-based coalition of community, government, professional and faith based organizations.

Sylvester is looking for volunteer citizens to get involved by going into their neighborhoods and give 3 hours a day for 90 days. 10,000 if possible, but he’d be pleased if he gets 1000. What I like about this idea is that these volunteers are not ‘the man.’ They are fathers, uncles, cousins, brothers, and sons of families living in the neighborhood, not police with guns, clubs, and pepper spray. This kind of involvement will be the starting point for turning things around in the city and the commissioner deserves all the support he can get.

Newspaper “Outs” Anonymous Forum Poster

I really don’t see the point in ‘outing‘ the identity of a poster in any forum on any topic when that forum permits the use of an alias. Use of an alias offers an anonymous opinion, which is just that, an opinion. Forums are meant to encourage dialog and the forum is where that dialog belongs, with one possible exception below.

IMHO, there is only one exception, and that is if any laws are broken, then the authorities (that wouldn’t be the newspaper) should be notified. Then, the newspaper has an obligation to report whatever ‘news’ is generated by the authorities. That’s journalism. This forum flap is not journalism. Despite what Pensacola News Journal editor Richard A. Schneider says . . .

You have the right to know that and we have the obligation to tell you.

I couldn’t disagree more. In the context of anonymous posting, should the newspaper take on the role of bully toward posters who they don’t particularly like or who carry some amount of notoriety or their occupation? Should they publish the poster’s email address? Of course not. If an editor has something to say about a post, the forum is the place to respond, with or without an alias. To strip the anonymity and take it to the editorial page where the unwashed might see a huge and (to borrow a recently overused word) “phony” scandal is something more than irresponsible.

If you want to stifle debate then change the rules to not allow aliases. It certainly will trim the tripe.

The irony of a newspaper (which has special first amendment protection) actively attacking free speech might be considered an abuse of that protection, and is just a bit hypocritical if not unethical in an of itself.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), Here’s Your Answer

During Sen. Reid’s harangue of Rush Limbaugh, a private citizen, on the floor of the Senate, he says this about spewing hate at our troops. “I can’t help but wonder how my Republican colleagues would have reacted if the tables were turned — if a well-known Democratic radio personality had used the same insulting line of attack against troops who support the war.” Harry, you wouldn’t understand so I’ll type real slow.

“I can’t help but wonder how my Republican colleagues would have reacted ”

That’s easy. There wouldn’t be any reaction because they don’t read Media Matters crap as fact. Its easy because he didn’t say what he is being accused of saying, and they might have bothered to listen to him first-hand.

No big deal, just another rabid lib. That’s how they would have reacted.

This is of course a hypothetical question. You first have to have a well-known Democratic radio personality.

I think he really meant Liberal, not Democratic.  As if Rush is a Republican radio personality.   I disagree that Rush is a Republican radio personality.  He is a conservative radio personality.  Republicans and conservatives are two different entities nowadays.  The whole border issue revealed that.  Regardless, dominant liberal or Democrat radio personalities don’t exist.

Belly up to the counter. Politics are on the menu and Ross is on the grill.
