Was A Good Week For The Country, Bad Week For Harry Reid And Nancy Pelosi

In case you haven’t heard, what with the California fires and how everything is Bush’s fault, and they can’t put out the fires because the fire truck is in Iraq or some such, Congress’s dynamic duo, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) and Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have finished a stellar week in utter failure. And that’s a good thing. Here’s the checklist as I see it.

  1. The bad Dream Act S.2205, a stealth amnesty bill dreamed up by Dick Durban and Jack Murtha, did not pass. This is the bill that the media says is about helping illegal alien children. Oh how my heart beats for “the children.” The media never told you that these children could be 30 years old. And they could register for the program and no documentary evidence is required to qualify. And they could bring their (ostensibly) relatives living in Mexico, up to 18 or thereabouts, and no DNA test is required or even available to prove relations. And here’s the kicker, once registered they are all given legal status and they are exempt from ever being deported. Even if they have criminal records. Anything for a voting block. However, don’t go to sleep on this because Harry Reid can bring it to the floor again.
  2. The next bill to fall was the Democrat bloated SCHIP bill, H.R. 976. That was designed to increase the dependent voting block (and double the tax burden) by calling a person a child up to age 25, and to people with incomes in the middle class, 60-80k /yr.
  3. They lost an important aspect to the Domestic Surveillance Bill in the Senate Intelligence Committee yesterday. They agreed Thursday to a provision that would grant immunity to telecommunications companies that have helped the government in its domestic surveillance programs. They also didn’t want us listening in on Bin Laden if he called someone, anyone, in the United States.
  4. Nancy Pelosi pulled the Armenian Genocide Resolution from the floor, intended to put a stick in the spokes of the war in Iraq after it was clear to everybody, including the MSM, that the timing was more than suspect.

You’re not hearing much about how successful the surge is either. All measure of attacks are down from 40-80 percent. Marines in Anbar province are getting bored. Haven’t found an IED since April. It was Sen. Harry Reid who made the statement that the war is lost and that was late last Spring before the surge was fully in place.

All in all, I’d say the Democrats in Washington pretty much accomplished nothing. Another good week for the country.

Price Controls Don’t Work

Ever hear that the fix is worse than the problem? Due in no small way to the ‘save the planet’ hysteria, bio-tech industries have driven the cost of basic foodstuffs up worldwide. That’s when, sure as gravity, the law of supply and demand inserts itself and the four, or six, or eight cylinder cars you drive begin to compete with your four, six, or eight family members for fuel/food.

And again, sure as gravity, politicians will call for price controls to ‘solve’ the problem. I am not aware that price controls have ever effectively altered the law of supply and demand. What they lead to is more shortages of supply. When the $20 loaf is forced to be sold at $2 via ‘price controls,’ that $2 loaf will disappear. IE. its $2 only if you can find one. Witness the empty supermarket shelves in Venezuela where the hemisphere’s idiot, Hugo Chavez, put price controls in effect for his oil rich country. That is exactly what Vladimir Putin will get when he does it. You can’t expect a communist to understand how markets react to supply and demand, but his motivations are more sinister. He is motivated by an upcoming election, not feeding his people.

Putin is just trying to save his administration’s popularity before the parliamentary elections in December.

Russia is introducing Soviet-style price controls on some basic foods in an effort to prevent spiralling prices from denting the Putin administration’s popularity ahead of parliamentary polls in December . . . to freeze prices at October 15 levels on selected types of bread, cheese, milk, eggs and vegetable oil until the end of the year.

He is more interested in himself and his party than his country. Not unlike the behavior of Democrats in Washington.

Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week, Ocotber 22-26, 2007

Did you know that this week is Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week? Well it is, and here are two links to get you started. Not for your kids. I warned you.

Michelle Malkin: Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week kicks off

The Religion of Peace.com

Study:69% of American Muslims are great Americans. It’s the other 31% that concerns me.

Funny that CAIR doesn’t have mush to say about Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week.

Tempers may flare over Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. David Horowitz, a ’60s anti-war radical who later took a right turn, says he’s trying to sound an alarm about radical Islam. His efforts have drawn much criticism.

Then there’s this gem: Killing of Non-Muslims is Legitimate (British Mullah)

Chavez Calls Catholic Leaders “Morally Unacceptable”

In a you have to see it to believe it moment, Venezuelan Dictator and President Hugo Chavez, criticizes Roman Catholic leaders in his country as “morally unacceptable” after they called him on his attempt to re-write their constitution to strike out the term limits so he can remain in office.

Church leaders on Friday issued a strongly-worded statement accusing Chavez of seeking to concentrate power with an “authoritarian” proposal to overhaul the OPEC nation’s constitution that he helped rewrite in 1999.

“They say the reform is morally unacceptable – they are morally unacceptable,” Chavez said in a government press release sent out on Sunday night. “Those bishops that we have make us ashamed.”

Louisiana Elects Republican Piyush (Bobby) Jindal Governor

Louisiana’s gubernatorial election yesterday has all the elements of the American dream. A son of Governor elect Bobby JindalIndian immigrants, Rep. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) is the first minority to be elected governor since Reconstruction. He won with 53% of the votes against two multimillionaire opponents who, unlike Jindal, put millions of dollars of their own money to run against him.

Jindal, a 36-year-old Republican, will be the nation’s youngest governor. He had 53 percent with 625,036 votes with about 92 percent of the vote tallied. It was more than enough to win Saturday’s election outright and avoid a Nov. 17 runoff.

“My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana.”

Second and third place finishers were Democrat Walter Boasso, who put in $5 million of his own money, got 18 percent of the vote. And Independent John Georges, who put in $11 million of his own cash, got 14 percent. Eight other candidates garnered the rest of the votes.

At 53% to 18%, of if you prefer to look at it another way, 53% to 32%, it appears that the people of the State of Louisiana have decided that decades of Democrats in Baton Rouge, highlighted by the Hurricane Katrina disaster, has not worked out. It also means, as new RNC Chair Mike Duncan says, that “Republican candidates who are true to our Party’s fundamental principles win at the ballot box.”

The reporting of his victory, history-making as it is, has brought up a new phrase for what I would call a minority. “Non-white.” What’s up with that? I think ‘minority’ is not only correct but it doesn’t have a color of skin attached to it. Are we now to believe that ‘minority’ means black? Is there some sort of ownership regarding race for the word ‘minority?’

Jindal, whose first name is Piyush, is the son of immigrants from India and the first non-white Louisiana governor since Reconstruction in the 1870s.

And then there are the nutroots. Who claim that the DNC is calling the GOP racists. Can’t anything happen without being accused of being racist? Didn’t we already go through this last year? It isn’t and wasn’t the Republican party that had a paucity of blacks in key positions of government.

Putin’s Caspian Summit

They didn’t tackle their biggest problem, like who owns what of the Caspian Sea? But Putin wants an agreement on a defensive alliance against foreign military forces or attack on any single member of the Caspian Summit. OK, he’s acting paranoid, but he’s just getting tight with Iran while keeping the Caspian Sea off limits to all vessels not under a member state’s flag. This is Putin’s move to put more distance between Iran and any supply route that the U.S. might use in case they need to pay a visit to Tehran.

And then there’s this gem from Tehran Times. A sister paper to the New York Times I think.

First Vice President Parviz Davudi said on Wednesday

that the Iranian government is willing to develop relations with other countries and foster political, economic and social cooperation with all countries excluding the illegitimate regime of Israel.

From the reporting of the summit it seems that Putin is driving the bus.

Harry Reid’s “Smear Letter” Results

The sale of Harry Reid’s attack letter (signed by 41 senators, some presidential wannabes, all Democrats) on the free speech of a private citizen, Rush Limbaugh, breaks eBay’s record for a charitable donation sale. Previous to this the record was $800,000 for one of Jay Leno’s motocycles. This historic document, four pieces of paper, went to Betty Casey for $2,100,100 yesterday. Limbaugh’s press release here, including the philanthropic background of Betty Casey.

And for the most ridiculous item of the day (MRIOTD), Sen. Harry Reid’s pathetic attempt to take some credit for the eBay auction.

Have you noticed the virtual blackout on this letter and what exactly it represents in the mainstream media?

PDF of the infamous and historical letter, signed by Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, Charles Schumer, and my own Bill Nelson among others.

Sands In Atlantic City Demolished

Putting a different twist on bringing the house down, the Sands Hotel and Casino was imploded. It appeared to go down like a deck of cards. See the video.

I liked Atlantic City before they bulldozed it to build casinos. The city was a city back then. Atlantic City has not had a mayor for decades that has not been charged with racketeering or some such felony. That’s not to say that casino gambling has anything to do with it, but that’s where the money is.

Belly up to the counter. Politics are on the menu and Ross is on the grill.
